What Fabric Elasticity and Recovery Measure

Fabric elasticity measures how far a material stretches under load. Recovery measures how completely it returns once the load is removed. The two travel together in a stretch garment: a fabric with high elasticity and poor recovery grows at the knee and the elbow, so a garment that fit on day one fits badly by month three.

Bodywear buyers notice recovery before they notice anything else. A swimsuit that sags, a legging that loses its shape at the waist and a compression top that stops compressing all fail for the same reason, and each failure arrives after the return window has closed.

Elastane Content and Fabric Elasticity

Stretch comes from elastane blended into a base fibre, and the percentage sets how far fabric elasticity reaches. Around five percent suits a fitted top, twelve to twenty percent suits swimwear and active bottoms, and a spandex heavy blend is used where compression is the point. Higher elastane content also raises cost and shortens the life of the fabric if the yarn degrades in chlorine.

Ask for the blend by percentage rather than by description when comparing fabric elasticity across suppliers. Test Methods for Fabric Elasticity and Recovery

The Stretch and Return Test

Cut a strip, mark a ten centimetre gauge length, stretch it to twenty centimetres and hold for a minute. Release, wait a minute, then measure the gauge again. A return within three percent of the original length is a working fabric. Anything beyond five percent will show as a bagged panel in wear.

The Cyclic Load Test

Repeat the stretch and release cycle twenty times to judge fabric elasticity under fatigue, and measure after the last one. Fatigue is the failure mode that decides whether a garment survives a season, and a fabric that passes a single cycle can fail this one. Run the test on a stitched sample rather than on loose fabric, since the seam affects the result.

Why Recovery Fails Over Time

Three causes dominate fabric elasticity failures. Elastane degrades in chlorine and in high heat, so a swim garment washed in hot water loses recovery faster than its fibre content suggests. Excess tension at the cut stage pre-stretches the fabric, and the panel relaxes into a wave after the first wash. And an overly tight stitch line limits the movement the knit was designed to provide.

Fabric Elasticity in Swimwear and Bodywear

Swimwear is the hardest test of fabric elasticity because chlorine attacks elastane and the garment is worn wet under load. Construction Choices That Protect Recovery

Cut stretch fabric relaxed, not under tension. Lay the panel flat, let it settle for a few hours, then cut, because a knit that is stretched when cut springs back after construction. Specify a stretch stitch on every seam that crosses a moving area, and keep the seam allowance consistent so the panel takes up the same amount of fabric on both sides.

Elastic trims fail on their own schedule. A waistband elastic with low recovery outlives the fabric and then abandons it, so match the trim grade to the body fabric and test the pair together rather than separately.

Sizing a Stretch Garment

Publish a body measurement chart rather than a garment measurement chart for stretch styles. A garment that stretches can be listed as one size and fit three, and a buyer who orders by body measurement gets the intended fit. State the intended compression level in words so a buyer knows whether the top should feel snug or relaxed.
