Why Fabric Shrinkage Happens

Fabric shrinkage is the change in a garment's dimensions after washing, and it comes from two sources. Fibres relax when heat and water release the tension applied during spinning and knitting, and some fibres also felt or compact as they swell. Cotton moves most, synthetics move least, and a blend lands somewhere between the two. Fabric shrinkage is not a fault in the fabric; it is a property to measure, specify and allow for.

How Much Shrinkage Is Normal

Most knit cotton garments lose three to seven percent of their length in the first wash, and a fabric shrinkage figure above that points to a blank that was not pre-treated. Wovens behave differently again, because the structure resists movement in one direction more than the other. Two percent sounds small until it is applied to a body length of seventy centimeters, where it is more than half a size.

Cotton, Blends and Synthetics

Cotton absorbs water, swells and then contracts as it dries, which is why a cotton tee is the classic shrinker. Polyester is heat set during production, so it holds its dimensions and contributes little movement to a blend. A fifty fifty blend therefore shrinks less than pure cotton but more than pure polyester, and the knit structure underneath still matters.

Some fibres also respond differently to heat than to water. Wool can felt under heat and agitation, which is a larger and less predictable change than simple relaxation, and it does not reverse. Knit Versus Woven

A knit bends and recovers, so it shrinks in both directions and often recovers part of the loss when worn. A woven fabric has less room to move, so it shrinks less overall but more permanently. That difference explains why a knitted tee feels tighter after a wash and then relaxes, while a woven shirt stays smaller.

Pre-Shrunk and Garment Washed Options

Pre-shrinking addresses fabric shrinkage before the garment reaches you: the blank has been washed or compressed, so most of the movement has already happened. Garment dyeing and garment washing do the same job and add a softer hand as a side effect. Both cost more than a raw blank, and both are worth it on any product where fit is the main promise.

Pre-shrinking is not the same as eliminating shrinkage. A pre-shrunk cotton tee still moves a little on the first wash, typically under three percent, and that residual matters on a fitted garment. Ask the supplier for the tested figure rather than the marketing term, because the number is what lets you write a specification.

Testing Shrinkage Before a Run

Measuring fabric shrinkage takes one garment per fabric and a tape measure. Mark the sample before washing, record the length and width, wash at the care temperature you intend to print on the label, dry it the way a buyer would, then measure the same points again. Do that for every new blank rather than trusting a specification sheet.

A Wash Test You Can Repeat

Repeatability matters more than sophistication. The same temperature, the same cycle and the same drying method on every sample give you numbers that can be compared, while a different setting each time produces noise. Run the cycle three times, because the second and third washes often move a garment more than the first.

Writing a Size Tolerance Into a Spec

A specification that names only a size leaves fabric shrinkage out of the contract. Add the measured dimensions for that size and the tolerance allowed after washing, then grade the tolerance across the size run the same way the garment is graded. A tolerance of half a size on a small is a different problem from the same number on a double extra large.

Publishing a size chart is only honest if the chart matches what a buyer holds after a wash. Either publish post-wash measurements or state clearly that the chart is pre-wash, because fabric shrinkage decides which of the two a buyer should expect.
