Viscose and Rayon Fabrics for Custom Apparel
8 Fabrics & Materials
Viscose fabric and rayon are the same fibre under two names, and both give a liquid drape that no cotton shirt copies. The fibre is regenerated from wood pulp, which makes it semi synthetic rather than fully synthetic, and the result feels cool, falls close to the body and takes dye with a depth that suits strong colour. For a custom range aimed at warm weather or a soft silhouette, viscose fabric does work that cotton cannot.
Viscose fabric dries slowly, shrinks when washed hot and loses strength when wet, so it needs low heat decoration and gentle care instructions. Blending it with polyester or cotton fixes the durability problem while keeping most of the drape. The blend ratio decides how much of each property survives, so the first decision on a new style is composition, and the second is the decoration method that suits the surface you end up with.
How viscose fabric prints and embroiders
Sublimation only works on polyester, so a pure viscose fabric cannot be sublimated. DTF and DTG both apply, and they hold detail well on a smooth viscose surface because there is little texture for the ink to fight. The risk sits in handling rather than in resolution. Wet viscose stretches, so a garment has to be supported flat through the press and left to cool before it is folded, or the print area distorts along the grain.
Embroidery on viscose fabric requires more planning than on a knit. The fibre is slick and lightweight, so the cloth needs a stable backing or the stitch pulls the surface into a pucker. Dense logos work better than fine line work, and a mid-weight density with a water soluble topping keeps the detail readable. Where a style needs both a draped body and a crisp mark, a bamboo-cotton or a tri-blend fabric often solves the problem with less effort than forcing viscose to behave.
Where viscose fabric belongs in a range
Dresses, blouses, wide-leg trousers, scarves and resort shirts are the natural home for viscose. The fibre also suits all-over print better than a placement logo, because a full surface pattern hides the crease lines that would look like a fault on a plain garment. If a product line depends on a large graphic, viscose fabric gives the artwork a softness that feels intentional rather than printed.
Weight separates the categories. A 110 to 130 gsm viscose is a light blouse cloth, 140 to 160 gsm holds a dress shape, and anything above 180 gsm starts to behave more like a crepe trouser fabric with real structure. Ask for the weight in gsm and a shrinkage figure before sampling, because the guide to fabric weight and drape shows how much of a garment's movement is decided by the number rather than the fibre.
Care instructions that keep viscose selling
Write care copy that assumes the buyer will read it once. Cool hand wash or a delicate cycle, no bleach, no hot dryer, and a low iron on the reverse side covers the main risks. Viscose fabric loses about 4 to 6 per cent of its length in the first hot wash, and that shrinkage is permanent, so a buyer who ignores the label ends up with a garment one size smaller and a review that reflects it.
Contrast the care needs of each fibre in your listings. A poly-cotton shirt can be tumble dried while a viscose blouse cannot, and the note on cotton vs polyester printing explains why those two surfaces also behave differently under the press. Buyers who see the difference stated before they order arrive with the right expectations, and return rates on delicate fabrics drop when the label and the listing agree.
Blending viscose fabric for durability
A 60/40 viscose-polyester blend keeps most of the drape and adds wash stability, which makes it a practical choice for volume products such as uniform shirts and printed dresses. A 50/50 viscose-cotton blend is softer and more breathable but creases more. Adding 5 per cent elastane lifts the recovery enough for fitted silhouettes, and the note on bamboo and modal fabrics covers the neighbouring cellulosic options that behave in a similar way.
Test each blend on the exact product it will be sold as. A blend that performs well on a loose blouse can fail on a fitted dress because the same recovery that helps a garment spring back also pulls a seam. Print a sample, wash it three times at the temperature you plan to recommend, and measure the print before and after. That measurement is the only reliable evidence for a durability claim in your copy.
Keep the range coherent. If a collection pairs a viscose fabric dress with a structured outer layer, the two fabrics have to agree on colour under the same light, and the notes on bamboo fabric printing show how different cellulosic fibres absorb dye at different rates. Colour drift between two garments sold as a set is a complaint that costs more to fix than the sample that would have caught it.
