RPET Polyester Sourcing and Declarations

What Buyers Need From a Recycled Polyester rPET Supplier
Sourcing recycled polyester rPET for custom apparel comes down to three documents: a transaction certificate that ties the material to a specific production batch, a test report on fibre properties, and a declaration of recycled content by weight. Without the first, a recycled polyester rPET claim is marketing rather than evidence. Buyers who ask for all three before placing a first order avoid most of the problems that surface later in a marketplace audit.
The material itself is straightforward. Recycled polyester rPET is produced by melting post-consumer bottles or post-industrial waste and re-polymerising it into filament or staple fibre. What varies between suppliers is traceability, not chemistry.
How the Supply Chain Splits
Two routes dominate. Mechanical recycling grinds and re-melts bottles, which is cheaper but shortens the polymer chain each cycle. Chemical recycling breaks the polymer back to monomers, which restores virgin-equivalent properties at a higher cost. A recycled polyester rPET quote that arrives well below market usually points to a mechanical route with a lower recycled share than the certificate implies.
Blending is normal and not a problem on its own. Many recycled polyester rPET fabrics are blends of recycled and virgin fibre because the mill needs a minimum performance floor. The question to ask is the percentage, stated in writing, and whether that percentage is measured on the yarn or on the finished garment. The two numbers differ once dyeing and finishing enter the process.
The certification picture around recycled fibre is covered in our note on recycled polyester for POD certifications that matter, which lists what each standard does and does not prove.
Reading a Recycled Content Declaration
A usable declaration names the standard, the certification body, the certificate number, the valid date range, and the product scope. A recycled polyester rPET declaration that lists only a logo and a percentage fails the first audit question. Ask for the certificate number and check it against the issuing body's public register before you print the claim on packaging. Ideally the wording names the fibre itself rather than a generic mark.
Scope wording is where claims get sloppy. Certificates often cover the yarn rather than the finished tee, so a declaration may be accurate at the mill gate and misleading on a hangtag. Keep the recycled polyester rPET claim specific: state the fibre and the percentage, and avoid claiming the whole garment is recycled.
Brands that make both material choices should compare them side by side. Our piece on organic cotton vs recycled polyester for POD apparel sets out where each fibre wins on hand feel, print behaviour, and documentation load.
How Recycled Fibre Behaves in Print and Wear
Recycled polyester rPET prints much like virgin polyester on sublimation, and the colour response is close enough that most designers can share one profile. Mechanical-route fibre can show slightly more variation between batches, which shows up in dye lots rather than in print. Ask for a dye lot range if your product line depends on colour consistency across reorders.
Pilling and abrasion performance depend more on the knit structure than on the recycled content. Understand the fibre behaviour first, then the fabric engineering. Our explainer on recycled polyester supply and quality explained goes through the mill-side variables that move those results.
Documentation That Survives a Reorder
Certificates expire. A recycled polyester rPET order placed in March may ship against a certificate that lapses in June, and marketplaces do check dates when they review claims. Build a renewal date into your supplier record so you request the updated document before the old one lapses.
Keep the paperwork attached to the production record. Our guidance on production documentation for repeat orders shows how to file certificates alongside the print specs so a reorder inherits the same evidence trail.
Marketplace listings need the claim to match the document word for word. If your listing copy says something the certificate does not support, you carry the risk. Our guide to Amazon A plus content for custom product listings covers how claim wording interacts with listing review.
What Can Go Wrong in Transit
A recycled polyester rPET shipment arriving with damaged cartons is a supply continuity problem, not only an insurance one. Claims on damaged apparel take weeks, and a reorder takes longer. Our article on shipping insurance and claims for custom goods explains what evidence makes a claim settle quickly.
Ask for carton packing photographs before dispatch. Suppliers who document packing as standard practice are also the ones who can supply clean traceability paperwork, and that correlation saves a lot of back and forth.
A Sourcing Checklist for Recycled Polyester rPET
Before you sign, confirm four things: the certificate number is verifiable, the recycled percentage is stated for the finished product, the declaration names the fibre rather than a generic mark, and the renewal date sits inside your production window. Add a batch-level transaction certificate to every purchase order, because that is the document that ties a specific shipment to the claim on your label.
Then test the material in production rather than in theory. Order a small recycled polyester rPET run, wash it, print it, and compare the result with your current fabric before you move a whole line across. See how that works end to end by reviewing the production process, then start with a sample in the custom product range.
