Sublimation fabric printing converts solid dye into gas and bonds it inside polyester fibers, so the print never sits on top of the fabric and does not crack or peel. Sublimation fabric has to be polyester, or a polyester-coated blank, because cotton has no polymer structure to absorb the dye.
Sublimation fabric behaves differently from every other decoration method you can buy. There is no film sitting on the surface, no ink layer waiting to fade, and no rubbery hand feel after the first wash. The color becomes part of the fiber itself, which is why it survives repeated laundering better than almost anything else you can put on a garment.
How Sublimation Fabric Printing Works
Sublimation printing runs on a simple physical change. Heat presses raise the temperature to roughly 380 to 400 degrees Fahrenheit, and at that point the solid dye in the transfer paper turns directly into gas without passing through a liquid stage. The gas penetrates the open polymer structure of the polyester. When the heat comes off, the dye cools and solidifies back inside the fiber, permanently locked in place.
That sequence explains why sublimated fabric feels like nothing was added to it. Run your hand across a fresh sublimation print and you feel the original knit, not a coating. Stretch the garment and the print stretches with it because the dye moves with the fibers. There is no cracking along fold lines and no peeling around seams, which are the two failure modes that drive most print quality complaints on heat transfer work.

Why Polyester Is Required and What Happens on Cotton
Cotton has no polymer structure to open. Its cellulose fibers will not absorb sublimation dye gas, so the color ends up sitting on the surface as a faint, washed-out image that fades quickly. A cotton tee run through a sublimation press looks dusty and dull, and after two or three washes most of the color is gone.
Blends complicate the picture further. A 50/50 cotton-poly shirt takes a muted, vintage-looking print because only the polyester portion accepts dye. That can be a deliberate design choice for a faded aesthetic, but it is a bad surprise if you were expecting vivid color. Suppliers usually quote a minimum of 65% polyester for a print that holds up, and 100% polyester for full saturation.
Polyester double-faced fabric, which bonds a brushed inner face to a smooth outer face, handles sublimation particularly well because the tight outer surface accepts dye evenly across large panels. The One Exception: Polyester-Coated Blanks
Some cotton garments ship with a thin polyester coating applied to the surface, and these can accept a sublimated design. The print sits on the coating rather than inside cotton fibers, so it looks closer to a transfer than a true sublimation. Durability is shorter too, because the coating itself can wear away in high-friction areas. Treat coated blanks as a budget option, not a replacement for genuine polyester.
Constructions That Sublimate Cleanly
Not every polyester knit behaves the same under heat. The knot structure controls how evenly dye distributes and how crisp fine detail looks.
Tricot is a warp-knit with a smooth, dense face and is the standard base for sports jerseys and lightweight performance tops. Interlock knits offer a two-sided smooth surface with more body, which suits polos and heavier activewear. Mesh constructions open the fabric with visible holes, and they sublimate well because the yarn itself is still polyester, giving you breathable panels with full color. Microfiber and spandex-blend performance knits take sublimation with excellent detail resolution, which makes them the default for swimwear and compression gear. Where Seams, Zippers, and Panels Break a Design
A sublimated panel is printed flat before the garment is cut and sewn, so the artwork never crosses a finished seam. Every seam is a hard stop. If your design has a continuous element that runs from the front chest to the sleeve, you need to split it into separate pieces and align registration manually. Give yourself a bleed margin of at least half an inch on every edge of each panel to absorb cutting tolerance.
Zippers are the other common failure point. A center-front zip interrupts the print line, and the slider sits in the middle of whatever graphic you place there. Anchor the design so the most important visual weight lands on the panels beside the zip rather than behind it.
White panels present a third problem. Sub-limitation cannot print white, because the process adds dye rather than pigment. If your design calls for white text or shapes inside a dark print, the white areas have to come from the fabric itself, which means leaving those zones unprinted. Plan your artwork around this constraint from the start instead of discovering it at the proof stage.

Design Guidance for Seamless Repeats and Panel Mapping
Start with a full garment template rather than a single front print area. Map each panel separately, because sleeves, side bodies, and hood pieces are cut from different sections of your artwork. Build the repeat at the dimensions of the largest panel and let a tile flow naturally across the rest so the pattern reads as continuous once the garment is assembled.
Keep line weights above one point. Sublimation holds fine detail better than most methods, but hairlines under a single point can soften at the edges where gas diffusion is uneven. Solid blocks of saturated color are the safest choice, and gradients print smoothly when the transition spans at least half an inch.
Preview your pattern on the actual garment silhouette before you commit. Flat artwork on screen tells you very little about how a repeat will look across a curved sleeve or how a large graphic will sit on a fitted torso.
